BB&T Coastal Field Renovations

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Coastal Federal Field is the home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, an Advanced-A Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The team, under new ownership, wanted to improve the fan experience. Barton Malow provided construction management services for the phased renovations to the stadium.

Phase I renovations included a new 800 SF ticket office with 8 ticket windows; relocation of visiting team bullpen; construction of a beach pavilion area along the left field foul line; renovation to the existing playground and kids areas; expansion of the existing commissary building to accommodate additional food services; addition of aluminum grandstands to the left field patio and outfield seating sections; reconstruction of all concession stands to increase fan appeal; and power and utility upgrades for a new scoreboard. Also included are construction of a new ticket building and improvements to the main gate entrance.

Phase I work, completed during the first two months of baseball season, required close coordination with the team to minimize disruption to game-day activities and events while maintaining a safe environment for fans and staff. Phase II renovations include renovating the retail store; new 1,200 SF office suite and renovation of existing office suite; installation of new box seating in front of the scoreboard; centerfield club deck and service bar; and relocation of existing ornamental fencing and gates.

Barton Malow and L. Robert Kimball, the architect, previously worked together on a new, award-winning baseball stadium for Penn State. The University shares this facility with the State College Spikes. The Pelicans and the Spikes have the same owner.
