DeKalb County Schools Peachtree Middle School
Decatur, Georgia

The new Peachtree Middle School for DeKalb County involved phased demolition of an existing building and construction of a new facility. The result is a new 146,000 SF public middle school that functions as a charter school. The building design includes 71 instructional units and support facilities including kitchen, cafeteria, administration and counseling offices. Work also included significant site improvements such as parking, vehicle pathways, landscaping and athletic field improvements.

Phase I included demolition of several classrooms, rerouting of primary electrical service, telephone and data systems and natural gas utilities and rerouting of vehicle circulation. During Phase I, a new cafeteria, gymnasium and fine arts instructional spaces were constructed.

Phase II included demolition of the existing gymnasium and support facilities, several classrooms and fine arts program spaces. As part of Phase II Barton Malow maintained security and protected student, faculty and staff access between the existing school building and the new facility. Phase II construction also included 100,000 SF of instructional space, classrooms, laboratories and media center.

Phase III consisted of demolition of the remaining old school building and construction of parking, bus and vehicle circulation and extensive landscaping.

The project was constructed while maintaining ongoing instructional and after school programs. We closely coordinated construction activities with day to day operations of the existing physical plant and bus and parent traffic.
