Atlanta Public Schools
Springdale Park Elementary
Atlanta,
Georgia
Facing rising student enrollment, Atlanta Public Schools constructed Springdale Park Elementary to alleviate overcrowded conditions at nearby Morningside and Mary Lin Elementary Schools. The project consisted of two components: new construction of a 43,142 SF classroom building and selective renovation to two historically significant structures on the site.
The school is located adjacent to an occupied and operational kindergarten. To reach the recreation facilities at a nearby church, the children had to cross through Barton Malow’s active construction site. To ensure safe passage, a designated path was installed with safety fences on either side and an extra guard posted at the entrance to monitor and control traffic. This careful attention to staging resulted in the efficient and safe transfer of students.
The renovated historic buildings house the administration, fine arts, and media center facilities. The classroom building is a three-story structure that houses, in addition to modern classrooms, the facility’s kitchen/cafeteria and gym.
The new school is designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification. This will make it the first LEED Certified school in the Atlanta Public School System. One of the largest and most notable LEED components is the geothermal ground loop system, used to heat and cool the school. This component is another first for Atlanta Pubic Schools.
