University of South Carolina
Horizon I Research Laboratory
& Parking Deck

Columbia, South Carolina

Barton Malow constructed this new 125,000 SF, 5-story research laboratory building and 1,000 car, 7-story parking deck for the University of South Carolina. The new brick and curtain-wall building houses research and laboratory space as well as classrooms, offices and support spaces and a small auditorium. The pre-cast parking deck connects to the new building via a pedestrian walkway, attached to a two-level terrace extending off the building.

The project site encompasses an entire city block in downtown Columbia. To maintain safety, Barton Malow constructed covered pedestrian walkways around the exterior of the construction fence. Close coordination for deliveries was imperative to avoid disruptions to the traffic flow surrounding the site. The facility is part of a larger University program to expand its resources and develop a state-of-the-art research park.
