Governor Frederick Johnson High School
Frederick, Maryland

Governor Thomas Johnson High School is the largest high school in the county and has a capacity for 2,200 students.

The project was a multi-phased, complete gut and renovation while the school remained in operation. The central plant and all building systems were completely replaced, as well as the kitchen, administration, media center and classrooms. Additions for an extended corridor and a new auxiliary gym were included, adding 9,000 square feet to the facility. The building was originally built in the 1960s, and the inherent problems associated with buildings of this age were overcome (i.e., hazardous materials, code, old technology).

The renovation addressed all areas of the approximately 308,000-square-foot existing space. All space was occupied during construction; and Barton Malow worked closely with the County, School, and Architect to develop and execute a comprehensive phasing plan to accomplish the work with minimal disruption. The renovated areas included classrooms, computer labs, media center, two gyms, science labs, cafeteria, 2,000-seat auditorium, offices, and surface parking. The project was done in 14 sub-phases over the course of 2-1/2 years. The building was fully functional year round.
