Muskegon Heights
High School

Muskegon Heights, Michigan

This $26.5 million, 600-student replacement high school houses full-service science and technology labs, a 2000-seat competition gymnasium, weight fitness area, six-lane natatorium, an 800-seat performance center, and a leading-edge art room. The building, designed by TMP Associates, was conceived to unify the student’s Mind (Academics), Body (Athletics) and Spirit (Performing Arts). These aspects are brought together in the Commons area, which serves as an informal gathering place for the student body.

Instruction continued in the adjacent high school during construction of the new facility. Once the new facility was complete, all of the old school, except the gymnasium, was demolished. The gymnasium from the old school was then converted to a new aquatic center.

The building also serves the community as a whole with the athletic and performing arts areas designed to allow for community use after school. A center of learning, a source of pride, and a gathering place for everyone — Muskegon Heights residents didn’t just build a new high school. They also built a closer knit and stronger community.
