Genesis
Healthcare System
Zanesville,
Ohio
Genesis
HealthCare System is a consolidation of Zanesville’s
two hospitals, Good Samaritan Hospital and
Bethesda Hospital, into one system. Both facilities
were experiencing difficulties and the market
could not support major upgrades to both. The
challenge for Barton Malow and its Design Division
was to ensure that Genesis HealthCare could
provide the best care to the community, spend
the least amount of dollars possible and maximize
their return on invested dollars.
The
Emergency Department at the Adair campus (Good
Samaritan
Hospital) had major throughput
and operations problems due to its age and
small size. It took approximately $3 million
dollars
and two phases for a complete renovation of
the department. Phase I built a new ambulance
entrance,
2 new trauma rooms, ancillary space and the
same number of exam rooms already existing.
After
Emergency personnel moved into the new space,
the former space was renovated into new admissions,
triage, waiting, and exam rooms. The result
was a new facility that can handle community
needs
and show the new face of Genesis HealthCare,
without introducing unnecessary debt load on
the hospital.
The
Obstetrics Department at the Maple Ave Campus
(Bethesda Hospital) was in need
of a consolidation
from two levels to one and upgraded to a Level
II nursery to provide proper service to the
community. Barton Malow developed a two-phase
renovation
of the 3rd floor wing of the hospital, and
built two new C-Section rooms and all new birthing
rooms. The unit remained open for service throughout
construction
The
project was completed in its entirety in October
2002.
