Replacement Burn Hospital

Boston, Massachusetts

Completed June 1999, the Shriners Burn Institute is a 200,000 SF specialty hospital that replaced an existing four-level hospital on the same property while remaining 100% operational. Phase one, replacement of the patient floors, was accomplished by erecting a structural steel frame and trusses around and over the existing building. Five levels were then completed on top of the trusses, over the existing building. After patients were transferred to the upper building, phase two included the demolition of the old facility, and construction of an underground garage and four-level infill with laboratories, offices, family apartments, an auditorium, and other support services.

The facility includes 30 patient beds and related surgical, medical, and patient care and outpatient treatment facilities; 30,000 SF of medical research space; and 2-1/2 levels of below-grade parking for 133 cars.

The Associated General Contractors conferred a Build America award on the entire Boston Shriners team.
