Dental School
Baltimore, Maryland

Founded in 1840 as the first professional dental school in the world, the University of Maryland Dental School is a very prestigious client. This was the first replacement dental school in the nation in the previous 25 years. Throughout its 160-year history, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery has remained a recognized leader in oral health education, taking pride in its commitment to providing the best in student education, patient care, and research opportunities. The new 365,000 gsf building includes classrooms, research and teaching laboratories and associated support areas, dental clinical facilities, administrative spaces, and student areas. Logistical challenges include building adjacent to the existing Dental School within a tight, urban site.

Building highlights include:

  • a highly developed electronic patient record system that will allow easy access to patient treatment plans, digitized x-rays, photographs, and account information from every one of the 340 clinical chairs, as well as from reception desks, faculty offices, and off-site locations
  • an Independent Learning Center dedicated to advanced information technology and housing 30 student workstations
  • a technologically advanced simulation laboratory featuring the latest pre-clinical training equipment, and equipped with its own closed-circuit television system, linked to a technology-enhanced instructor station
  • a virtual reality training center providing pre-clinical instruction to dental and dental hygiene students by simulating actual patient care experiences
