Barton
Malow has been providing construction services
to the University of Maryland since 1992. In
1996, The University of Maryland at Baltimore
(UMAB) chose Barton Malow as construction manager
on their $30 million School of Nursing project.
Phase
I of the project included construction of a
new 167,000 SF seven-story building with
one basement level and a penthouse. The facility,
designed by Ballinger Architects, features
an auditorium, new classrooms, multi-media
clinical
settings, nursing informatic laboratories,
computer assisted instruction (CAI) laboratories,
interactive
video laboratories (IVL), and clinical simulation
laboratories. A major feature is the use of
computerized “intelligent” mannequins
to create “virtual patients.”
Phase
II involved 13,492 sf of renovation to the
existing School of Nursing. Classrooms on
floors one through four were renovated to become
seminar rooms, student services space, admissions
office, health policy research suites, and
storage space.
Significant
urban site constraints and utility relocation
presented interesting challenges
to
our team. However, it did not disrupt the construction
schedule.
