DTE Energy Thumb Wind Park Project Recognized for Construction Excellence
Southfield, MI – The DTE Energy Thumb Wind Park project has been recognized for construction excellence. The project has been awarded a 2013 AGC of Michigan Build Michigan Award in the Design-Build category. Awards were presented at the Annual Meeting of the AGC of Michigan on Friday, February 14.
The Thumb Wind Park project consists of (69) 1.6 megawatt General Electric wind turbines, three electrical substations and an associated electrical collection system, located in Huron and Sanilac Counties. The park generates renewable energy capable of powering 25,000 homes in Michigan. Spread over 600 square miles - schedule adherence, trade coordination and maintenance of site logistics were key to the project’s success.
Located on 15,000 acres, the 110 MW wind park is divided into three primary turbine sites – known as Minden, McKinley and Sigel. The Minden site contributes 33 MW of power with 21 wind turbine generators (WTGs); the McKinley site provides 14 MW of power with 9 WTGs; and the Sigel site delivers 64 MW of power with 40 WTGs. All sites utilized GE 1.6 MW wind turbine generators on 96- and 100-meter towers.
With the project spread over such a large area and varying site conditions, the project team encountered multiple construction challenges. The team worked together seamlessly, successfully adapting to these challenges.
