Barton Malow and VMDO Selected as Design Build Firm for Virginia Commonwealth University Basketball Facility
Richmond, VA –– Design Build team members Barton Malow and VMDO Architects have been selected to design and build the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Practice Facility at Virginia Commonwealth University. The project will be managed out of the Richmond office of Barton Malow.
Located on West Marshall Street, north of the Siegel Center, the new VCU basketball practice facility will provide both the men’s and women’s programs with state-of-the-art facilities in one 58,000 square foot, two-story building that will aid in recruiting and player/team development.
The practice facility celebrates the activities within and strives to connect fans and passersby to the VCU Rams basketball programs. Clerestory lighting and expanses of glass foster a sense of openness and observation while spatially and visually connecting interior spaces – including academic, social, practice, and training areas – to the campus community outside. Significant indoor/outdoor connections allow pedestrians to “peek” into the facility’s practice courts and film rooms along Marshall Street, adding to the fan experience.
The facility also functions as a “good neighbor” by maintaining a scale that is in keeping with the Carver neighborhood and by using brick book-ends where the glass and metal-shingle building faces older residential brick buildings. Inside, hubs of activity recall the vigorous momentum of the men’s “Havoc” and women’s “Fury” basketball programs and relay this focused energy palpably to passersby.
The basketball practice courts are the heart of the new facility and are available day and night for players and coaches to hone their craft. Not merely gymnasiums, the courts pulse with the vibrancy of the current programs while offering an unparalleled set of immediately-accessible amenities, including strength and conditioning rooms, physical therapy and hydrotherapy areas, and video viewing and editing rooms. Abundant transparency offers direct views to and from coaches’ offices, conference suites, lounges, and locker rooms which wrap the courts on the upper floor.
A two-story hall of fame welcomes recruits and donors – as well as players, coaches, staff, and fans – while offering discreet glimpses of the practice courts, basketball offices, and weight facilities. Custom signage and signature finishes inject a fresh, sophisticated aesthetic into the spaces while reflecting the urban context and excitement and passion of Rams Basketball.
