Barton Malow Earns Build America Award for Bayfront Complex

Southfield, MI – June 10, 2009 - Barton Malow Company has won a Build America Award as construction manager and lead designer of the Bayfront Convention Center and Hotel Complex, Erie, Pennsylvania. This honor, conferred by the Associated General Contractors (AGC), also recognizes the work of the Erie County Convention Center Authority (ECCCA), Starwood Sheraton Hotels, DRS Architects of Pittsburgh, and local labor and community organizations.

Build America honors complex, innovative projects that are significant to both the construction community and the nation at large, according to the AGC.

Built on opposite sides of Presque Isle Bay, the Bayfront Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel are connected by a 184-foot skybridge, 65 feet in the air. Before ground-breaking, the ECCCA pledged that minorities would be fairly represented on the construction site. The city, trade unions, local grassroots organizations, architects and builders worked together to fulfill this mandate. The result is a skilled workforce that continues to benefit Erie. “This was a satisfying team effort in every way,” said Barton Malow Vice President Douglas Maibach, P.E., project executive for this work.
