Barton Malow completes Maryland General Hospital Expansion

Baltimore, MD – February 15, 2010 – Barton Malow Company has completed the Maryland General Hospital Central Care Expansion, a multi-phase addition and renovation project designed by Hord Coplan Macht Architects. Maryland General Hospital, part of the University of Maryland Medical System, provides comprehensive health care services to the residents of West Baltimore community. Located in downtown Baltimore, planning the logistics of construction around an active and occupied urban facility was one of the main challenges the construction team overcame. In addition to no lay-down space for this in-fill project, construction of the addition to the existing hospital required structural retrofit within functional hospital departments. Barton Malow worked closely with hospital staff to minimize disruption while construction progressed.

The Central Care project provides new operating rooms as well as new Intensive Care Units. Phase One involved the construction of a new six-story tower and a four-floor addition above an existing occupied wing. This includes approximately 75,000 square feet of newly fit-out spaces, including operating rooms, intensive care units, pre-op and post-anesthesia care units, pharmacy, labs, and miscellaneous staff and support spaces.

“I am extremely proud of the entire project team for their enthusiasm and dedication in meeting the many significant challenges related to schedule, quality, cost, and safety while delivering this beneficial project. The project team’s attention to detail was the determining factor for total project success,” stated Barton Malow Project Manager Scott Mull, LEED AP.
