Gordy graduated from Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business before starting his career working on the business side of a national homebuilder. After several years in that role, Gordy moved into a Project Engineer role with a national firm before becoming a Project Manager. He joined Barton Malow in 2015 and has worked on major automotive and entertainment programs before turning his focus to Mission Critical work.
What is your role at Barton Malow and what does your day-to-day look like?
As a Senior Project Manager at Barton Malow, I play a hands-on role in both preconstruction efforts and the strategic pursuit of new opportunities within the Mission Critical market. I thrive on collaboration—working closely with clients, design partners, and internal teams to develop comprehensive budgets, detailed schedules, and tailored logistics plans that align with the unique complexities of Mission Critical facilities.
My approach is rooted in relationship-building. I prioritize clear communication and trust, ensuring every client feels supported and confident in our ability to deliver. I stay engaged in market analysis to keep our strategies competitive and adaptable to evolving industry trends.
How did you end up choosing a career in construction?
I got into construction because I’ve always been fascinated by how things are built and come together. Even as a kid, I was drawn to hands-on projects and curious about the mechanics behind buildings and structures. I’ve always enjoyed solving problems and working with others, so construction seemed like a natural fit. Once I entered the industry, I quickly realized how rewarding it is to see physical results from your work and contribute to something with a lasting impact.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on and why?
I really enjoyed working at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit because it was such a high-profile, meaningful project for the city — and as a lifelong Red Wings fan, it was especially exciting. Being part of the team that built the new home for the Wings made the experience even more personal and rewarding. It wasn’t just about constructing an arena; it was about creating a world-class space where people come together for sports, concerts, and community events. The project was complex and fast-paced, which made it both challenging and energizing. It felt great to play a role in something that’s now a major part of Detroit’s comeback and its future.
