Marygrove Early Childhood Education Center Takes Home 2021 Merit Award from Engineering News-Record

Marygrove’s Early Childhood Education Center received the 2021 Award of Merit in the K-12 Education category from Engineering News-Record (ENR) Midwest. The 28,000-SF center will serve nearly 150 children as part of the Marygrove Conservancy’s vision to support youth from “cradle to career.”

The Marygrove Early Childhood Education Center represents a full-scale effort to provide quality learning opportunities to Detroit’s youth.

Winners of ENR Midwest’s 2021 Best Project Awards will be featured in-depth in this month’s edition of the magazine and recognized during a live event planned for December at Renaissance Chicago.

The panel of judges was comprised of executives from some of the region’s most celebrated civil engineering firms who generously donated their time and expertise in evaluating the entrants.

The project is a special one for Barton Malow because Marygrove’s Early Childhood Education Center is a public-private collaboration that seeks to solve some of the City of Detroit’s most prevalent challenges by providing success pathways to children. Barton Malow was founded in Detroit, continues to have a strong presence in the City’s building market, and is committed to providing job access to Detroiters who would like to have a career in the skilled trades.

The center’s design includes interior courtyards that bring in natural light, 12 spacious classrooms, community gathering rooms, a library, health therapy rooms, and a natural playscape that spotlights the beauty of the campus.

The center is operated by Starfish Family Services, a non-profit that provides integrated health and human services to Southeast Michigan families with limited access to education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and other essential resources.

The 2021 Award of Merit is a testament to the dedicated team at Barton Malow and its partners that built this transformative project.
