General Motors (GM) has officially opened its new world headquarters inside the Hudson’s Detroit Office Building—an integral part of Bedrock Detroit’s larger Hudson’s development. As the builder of Hudson’s and the team behind GM’s headquarters fit-out, Barton Malow helped create an office that sets a new standard for workplace design, functionality, and collaboration.
Spanning 200,000 SF across the top four floors, GM’s headquarters features a mid-century modern design with warm tones, natural wood, metal, and stone. Each level features unique details that celebrate GM’s legacy, such as wallpaper showcasing historic patents and another displaying thousands of songs that reference GM vehicles. The 11th floor includes executive office space, while an open atrium on the fifth floor features Ficus trees and a brass-coated steel sculpture created by renowned artist Harry Bertoia, fostering a space for connection and creativity. Down in the lobby, GM will showcase vehicles and concept cars that will be open to the public, creating an experience that links the company’s past and future.
On the outside of the Office Building, Barton Malow’s Self-Perform team installed four 20-by-20-foot General Motors signs, each positioned 170 feet above street level. The team worked to hang each sign on the corners of the building from midnight to 7am to avoid disrupting the public transit schedule.
GM’s headquarters joins other office tenants, retail, and event space as part of the overall 1.5 million SF Hudson’s development. This move brings GM back to Woodward Avenue, where its first headquarters opened in 1911.
