AlumniFi Field Rendering Barton Malow sports and entertainment project in Detroit

When Detroit City FC outgrew Keyworth Stadium, the club didn’t just need more seats. They needed a home worthy of what they’d built: a passionate, fast-growing fan base and an identity rooted in the city itself. That’s where Barton Malow comes in.

Selected as construction manager for AlumniFi Field, Barton Malow is helping bring Detroit City FC’s new 15,000-seat stadium to life in Detroit, situated between the Corktown and Mexicantown neighborhoods. The privately funded venue is designed to feel like the great football stadiums of Europe: natural grass, three permanent grandstands with canopies, and an atmosphere built for the game.

But AlumniFi Field is about more than soccer. It’s designed to be a gathering place for the surrounding community, capable of hosting concerts, sporting events, and neighborhood programming in a way that feels like it belongs where it stands.

“We built Detroit City FC on the belief that a club should reflect and serve its city, and AlumniFi Field is the next chapter in that promise — a home rooted unmistakably in Detroit’s character and authenticity.”

Sean Mann – CEO, Detroit City FC

A Site With a Story Worth Telling

The stadium will rise on the former site of Southwest Detroit Hospital, a Black-owned institution that opened in 1973 and earned national recognition for its commitment to hiring Black doctors and nurses during a time when that was far from standard. The hospital closed in 2006 and sat vacant until its demolition earlier this year.

As construction progresses, Barton Malow and Detroit City FC will work together to incorporate a permanent installation honoring the hospital’s legacy, ensuring that what was built there before isn’t forgotten in what comes next.

Delivering With an Integrated Approach

Barton Malow’s selection reflects what the team brings beyond construction management: self-perform capabilities across civil, concrete, steel, and interior work that create real schedule and cost certainty. Demolition of the former hospital is complete. Site work is underway, with deep foundation work, structural steel installation, and interior buildout to follow.
