Barton Malow was awarded the refractory installation of ArcelorMittal’s #4 and #5 walking beam furnaces at the west end of its 80” hot strip mill within the Burns Harbor facility. This installation included waste gas duct and recuperator refractory to be installed placed, as well as stacks to be refractory lined in place.
These new walking beam furnaces, two of the world’s largest, allow ArcelorMittal to eliminate the possibility of surface defects since slabs are walked through the furnace versus being pushed.
Barton Malow was able to deliver through established work package planning, from mobilization to site, all way through the last brick getting set. At the peak of our work, 128 craft members, consisting of bricklayers and laborers, were involved in the refractory installation of these furnaces.
