Serving Those Who Serve & Protect
Barton Malow is currently working with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) as part of a five-year term IDIQ contract for various projects in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Some of our recent projects include:
Ralph H. Metcalfe Federal Building - Interior Fire Alarm Replacement & Exterior Improvements
Barton Malow was selected for the Fire Alarm System Replacement and Exterior Envelope Improvements project at the Ralph H. Metcalfe Federal Building in downtown Chicago. The job was a tall task with 28 stories of retro-fitting a new system into a fully occupied office building while working second shift. The exterior scope of work included removal and replacement of all sealant joints. The interior portion of the project entailed the replacement of the building fire alarm system, including related sprinkler components, interfaces for the elevator system and the fire pump, and the relocation of the fire control room.
3rd Floor Customs House Renovation
Barton Malow served as General Contractor for the 3rd Floor Customs House Renovation project, an interior office renovation for the Custom & Border Protection Agency. The project involved the demolition of existing tenant space and construction of approximately 20,000 square feet of new space. The scope of work included: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEPFP); lighting control systems; ACT ceilings throughout; partitions; wall coating and coverings; flooring, and casework. Infrastructure work also consisted of a new security system and low voltage upgrades.
Amid the updated spaces is a 30-person war room that was used as a security hub dispatch center during the NATO summit that was hosted in Chicago. Other program spaces include ballistic storage rooms, closed offices and general office space.

The purpose of the Fall Protection / Roof Access project was to provide the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) maintenance personnel a safe way to access and repair roof equipment.
Prior to the Fall Protection / Roof Access project, employees did not have easy access to equipment and rooftop mechanical units. Barton Malow added aluminum ladders and stainless steel safety cables to connect the various levels and provide maintenance personnel safer, and more efficient access. In addition, the team inserted a cable railing system on the 13-story roof overlooking the three-story glass atrium as an increased security measure for maintenance personnel.
Simultaneously, the Barton Malow team installed a multi-level steel platform system between the original building exterior and glass curtain wall system to provide personnel access to the building façade for maintenance and cleaning. These new installations provide a safer and more easily accessible work environment for GSA employees.
