Hampden Medical Center

The Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center (HMC) is a greenfield hospital recently built on 44 acres near Interstate 81 in the heart of one of the fastest-growing counties in Pennsylvania. The new three-story building features 108 private inpatient beds, an emergency department with observation beds, physician offices, various specialty inpatient services, imaging and lab services, and complete medical and surgical capabilities.

Barton Malow and JV partner Alexander provided construction management services for the project. The modern facility gives residents of Cumberland County, Perry County, and the broader Harrisburg region access to the high-quality, comprehensive health services of Penn State Health without the drive to Hershey.

Lean Practices to Achieve Speed to Market

The pace of the HMC project required a new approach to achieve the speed-to-market goal – design to construction. While the design team was still needed to complete the traditional phases – schematic design, design development, etc. – the Barton Malow team focused on what was required to facilitate the earliest possible start and progression of construction.

Specific packages (patient rooms, mill orders, site work, etc.) were released independent of the design milestones. This approach required extensive implementation of IPD/IPD-Lite practices – intense collaboration, developing a culture of trust, pull planning, Target Value Delivery, GMP development strategy, and engaging eight design-assist partners. Site mobilization occurred only seven months after the design kickoff, and steel topping out was celebrated only seven months later.
