The Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage Facility (formerly known as Tilbury Battery Storage) in Lakeshore, Ontario, stands as Barton Malow Canada’s largest built battery energy storage facility in the province. The 80MW/320MWh project for Boralex Inc. reached substantial completion in 2025 in partnership with Walpole Island First Nation.
With more than 70,000 work hours and zero lost-time incidents, Barton Malow successfully delivered the project featuring 89 Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion units, which can provide four hours of clean, continuous power to the grid for approximately 80,000 homes.
The name “Sanjgon,” derived from the Nishnaabemwin language, honors traditional storage practices of Walpole Island First Nation families and the project’s commitment to meaningful community partnership. Sanjgon represents Boralex’s first operational battery energy storage facility in North America, a key component of its long-term growth strategy. A Community Benefit Agreement with the Municipality of Lakeshore will provide $1,000 per MW annually for the life of the project to support local initiatives.
Selected through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Expedited Long-Term Request for Proposals, Sanjgon directly supports Ontario’s Resource Adequacy Framework, adding resilience, flexibility, and reliability to Ontario’s electrical grid.
