Mark Klimbal, CSP
Corporate Safety Director

Insurance and safety groups, as well as our clients, have repeatedly recognized Barton Malow for safety performance consistently superior to the industry norm.

Leadership

Barton Malow's ISO certified safety program is led by our full-time Corporate Safety Director, Mark Klimbal, CSP. The Program requires mandatory safety training and participation of all project participants as well as safety planning for our projects.

Mark directs policies and practices to eliminate injuries and occupational illnesses, and protect the public around Barton Malow jobsites. The elimination of property damage is an additional focus.

Safety Procedures

Safety is a formal part of our corporate quality program. Barton Malow is ISO-9001-2000 certified, and has a detailed safety program. It includes directions on bid scope documents, hazardous materials, worker safety, and project site security, among other topics.

Additionally, project staff receive information on individual responsibilities, and details on accident prevention, employee attire and behavior, work procedures, and setting up and maintaining safe site conditions. Personnel practice emergency procedures; designated staff are trained in first aid and certified in CPR.

To achieve our goal of zero accidents, the Company:

Mandates safety certification for all operations employees.

Provides safety orientation for new employees and ongoing training.

Has safe work procedures in place to ensure safety planning to prevent accidents.

Measures its safety performance (e.g. Experience Modification Rate (EMR), OSHA safety statistics) and communicates safety performance to employees.

Tests all new non-contractual employees for substance abuse and all contractual employees where permitted by union agreement.

Evaluates subcontractor safety performance prior to bid awards and requires subcontractor safety plans.

Regulation Expertise

Knowing and understanding OSHA regulations is a priority. Still, local jurisdictions can be far more stringent. As part of our procedures we meet with the local fire marshal at project inception to ascertain the specific requirements for each project. Awareness of requirements and planning for safety are critical elements of success.

Safety Awards

Barton Malow's safety Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is well below the national EMR contractor average of 1.00.

The EMR is a workers' compensation insurance safety performance factor based on three years of loss experience.
