Smith & Rem Honored with Builder & Leader Awards

SOUTHFIELD, MI –– Each year Barton Malow employees are asked to nominate their peers to receive the Carl O. Barton Builder Award and the Ben C. Maibach, Jr. Leadership Award.

The Carl O. Barton Builder Award honors Carl Osborn Barton, one of the founding principals of Barton Malow Company. Criteria for winning this award includes having jobsite responsibility and displaying excellence in the following:

  • Completing projects on time, within budget, with minimal issues
  • Maintaining satisfied customers
  • Excellent builder acumen
  • Maximizing profitability
  • Someone who supports diversity has strengths in safety, teamwork, quality, planning, organization, and mentoring

Cliff SmithThis year’s Carl O. Barton Builder Award winner is Cliff Smith, Superintendent supporting Barton Malow’s Eastern Region. Cliff began his career at Barton Malow 8 years ago and has worked on various projects, most recently the University of Virginia New Cabell Hall Renovation. His ability to lead a team of co-workers, contractors, architects, and the owner along with his ability to keep a very difficult project on budget and on schedule helped him earn this year’s award.

One nominator described Smith as “An innovative problem solver constantly implementing new practices & products and sharing those with other BMC superintendents.”
The Ben C. Maibach Jr. Leadership Award honors Ben C. Maibach, Jr.’s career from laborer in 1938 to Chairman Emeritus of Barton Malow Company. Criteria for winning this award includes excellence in the following:

  • Behaving with integrity
  • Demonstrating compassion
  • Community involvement
  • Supporting diversity
  • Ability to inspire or motivate others
  • Mentoring and developing others
  • And is someone who makes you want to be a better person

Lindsey RemThis year’s Ben C. Maibach Jr. Leadership Award winner is Lindsey Rem, Project Solutions Manager. Lindsey has worked for Barton Malow for 13 years and is an individual who has had a broad career at Barton Malow. The first nine years of her Barton Malow career spanned from an Administrative role to Engineer to Project Manager. The knowledge and experience attained in each of those roles helped catapult this individual into one of the biggest company-wide initiatives in Barton Malow history…SAP. This individual has been instrumental from the implementation of SAP to stabilizing the system, and providing ongoing support and leadership.

One nominator eloquently wrote, “She produces exceptional results and expects likewise from her team, encourages growth and development, holds herself and others accountable, is balanced and grounded, works always for the betterment of the company, and above all, is inspiring to those around her. This, I think, is the epitome of true leadership
