Michigan State University Spartan Stadium North End Zone Addition

The North End Zone Expansion at Spartan Stadium provides all of Michigan State University’s 25 varsity sports, namely MSU Football, with a functional, championship-level facility that features a new game day locker room, the Spartan Engagement Center to be used by all sports for recruitment, a new media room and a redesign of entrance gates/plaza areas.

Game Day Logistics

The project timeline spanned through the 2013 football season, and occupied the space of the existing loading/staging space for game operations. The field tunnel, which is the only access to bring people and equipment onto the field surface, was in the middle of the project site. During the seven home games and one spring game, the Barton Malow project team had to accommodate full game day operations and more than 75,000 visitors to the stadium.

The short project timeline, and use of high end products, finishes, and custom items required a large effort to identify, plan for and track these items. Many specialty items arrived late in the project–to a site with a small building footprint.

Building through the football season while maintaining the level of access needed meant that special consideration was required on the overall sequence of the project. The team scheduled the project to allow for the new addition to be built throughout the football season, with the locker room renovation to occur post season. Activities that could interfere with pedestrian flow or access to the field needed to be identified and scheduled to occur on away weeks or bye weeks.   Foot traffic flows around the stadium on game days required the project team to create temporary walkways to the venue's tunnel for safe access to the facility.
