Elemental Energy Brooks II Solar, Solar Panel Rows

Brooks Solar II builds on the success of Brooks Solar, Western Canada’s first utility-scale solar project with Elemental Energy. The 27.5 MWAC/32.8 MWDC project spans 160 acres and has two 25kV Fortis interconnections. It was constructed in a joint venture partnership with SkyFire Energy Inc.

While the first phase of the Brooks Solar project was constructed with fixed solar panels, the Brooks Solar II project utilizes single-axis tracking (SAT) technology. The variable tilt tracker allows the solar panels to follow the sun’s movement from east to west throughout the day, significantly increasing power output. In addition to the tracking technology, Brooks Solar II employs bifacial modules, which are designed to capture not only direct sunlight on the front side but also reflected solar energy from the backside of the panel. This feature is particularly beneficial during the winter months when the ground is covered with snow, as the reflected additional sunlight enhances efficiency.

Alberta is making significant strides towards a renewables-led energy future. The province is experiencing a surge in solar and wind energy projects, which enabled it to phase out coal-fired power production six years ahead of schedule. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the province has also implemented new regulations aimed at protecting agricultural land and preserving scenic landscapes. These regulations ensure that the expansion of renewable energy projects does not come at the expense of Alberta’s natural beauty and agricultural productivity.

Though solar project sizes continue to grow, the Brooks Solar project represents an important milestone for renewable energy projects in Alberta. Utility-scale solar energy projects contribute to the province’s energy needs, and their generating capacity and rapid deployment allow coal-fired energy plants to be decommissioned more rapidly than originally forecast. As Alberta continues to embrace renewable energy, projects like Brooks Solar II will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.
