Structural Steel Tops Out at Morgan State University’s Health and Human Services Center

The Baltimore, Maryland-based project celebrated its topping out last month.

Morgan State University, a public historically Black research university in Baltimore, Maryland, has reached a significant milestone in its commitment to fostering innovation, research, and academic growth. The topping out ceremony of the new Health and Human Services Center signals the near completion of a state-of-the-art facility built by Barton Malow. This unique project reflects Morgan State’s dedication to advancing health and human services, offering a cutting-edge space where students, faculty, and the wider community can thrive.

A Design and Construction Marvel

Designed to inspire and facilitate groundbreaking research and learning, the new Health and Human Services Center will stand tall at the northeast corner of Argonne Drive and Hillen Road. The collaboration between the university, HOK Architects, and Barton Malow has resulted in a structure that seamlessly combines functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics. With its modern design elements and efficient use of space, the center will serve as a testament to the institution’s commitment to fostering innovation and community.

This project is one of the largest construction undertakings in Morgan State’s history. Barton Malow has installed over two million pounds of rebar throughout construction, laid nearly 15 miles of cable, and poured enough concrete to fill three Olympic-size pools. Our team — which includes many Morgan State students and alumni — continues to work safely, efficiently, and passionately to bring the vision for this building to life.

Cutting-Edge Facilities

The Health and Human Services Center is poised to become a hub of excellence in research, education, and community engagement. This facility provides a new environment for groundbreaking research and experiential learning, equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, simulation rooms, classrooms, and collaborative spaces. The center’s advanced technology and cutting-edge equipment will empower students and researchers to explore new frontiers in healthcare, social services, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Community Impact

Barton Malow, hand-in-hand with Morgan State, has always been deeply rooted in serving the communities surrounding campus, and the new center will serve as a catalyst for positive change. Its strategic location and design invite partnerships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and social service agencies, promoting collaboration and offering valuable resources. This strengthened relationship with the community will positively impact students’ health and well-being beyond the classroom walls.

Empowering Future Leaders

By providing an exceptional space for education and research, the Health and Human Services Center nurtures the growth of future leaders in healthcare and social services. The center will attract top-tier faculty members and researchers, enabling the university to expand its academic offerings and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Students will have access to mentorship opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and cutting-edge resources, empowering them to make a meaningful impact on society.

As the center nears completion, it promises to transform the landscape of health and human services education and research, empower future generations of students, and foster collaboration that will positively impact the local community. Morgan State University and Barton Malow have set a shining example of the power of partnership and the possibilities that lie ahead for Baltimore.
