Barton Malow self-performed the concrete structure, using automatic climbing formwork to construct the 11-story shear walls efficiently.
The Daytona Beach-based insurance firm Brown & Brown decided to build its world headquarters just five blocks from its existing office at Ridgewood Avenue. The new site was selected just five blocks from the existing office. As a result, a new corporate campus was planned along the Halifax River.
Construction management and concrete self-perform services were provided by Barton Malow. The headquarters was built as an 11-story building on 13 acres. The site was positioned to support long-term growth and visibility.
The building was seen as a new beginning for the downtown riverfront district. The area had been impacted by Hurricane Irma flooding in 2017, and economic activity had slowed. However, the new campus was developed to help drive recovery and growth.
Over 600 local jobs were added through the new development. In addition, future expansion opportunities were included in the master plan. As a result, continued job growth can be supported over time.
The 200,000-square-foot building was completed in June 2021. The facility includes outdoor terraces, board rooms, open office areas, and a kitchen. A separate chiller plant was also added to support mechanical systems.
Innovative Shear Wall Construction
Innovation was emphasized throughout the Brown & Brown project. In particular, the 12-story shear walls required a new construction approach. Therefore, new systems were evaluated and implemented.
The DOKA system was introduced and had not been used previously by the team. Automatic climbing formwork was provided through this system. As a result, the shear walls were completed efficiently and safely.
