Montgomery College Leggett Math + Science Building Tops Out

Montgomery College Math + Science Building

The Montgomery College Takoma Park project celebrated the placement of 565 tons of steel on the forthcoming Math + Science building.

Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus offers over 100 disciplines to more than 7,800 students from over 140 countries. Established in 1950, the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus is the headquarters of the College’s health sciences program and home to the School of Art + Design. The new Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building will serve as the centerpiece of the Takoma Park campus.

Barton Malow is serving as the construction manager for the $68-million facility – the first CM-at-Risk project in the College’s history. When complete, the new facility will fuel the local economy by preparing students for careers in competitive, in-demand fields from cybersecurity to life science.

Over the past three months, the team placed 565 tons of steel for the 105,000-SF building. To celebrate the progress of this important Montgomery College Takoma Park project, a ceremonial steel beam was set up on campus to be signed by students, faculty, and staff. On Friday, March 11, the same beam was presented on site to be signed by project team members, College administrators, and elected officials during the topping out celebration. Attendees heard from:

  • Dr. Jermaine Williams, Montgomery College President
  • Dr. Brad Stewart, Montgomery College Vice President/Provost of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus
  • Marc Elrich, Montgomery County Executive
  • Gabe Albornoz, Montgomery County Council President
  • Layann Bashir, Student

Additional elected officials in attendance included Montgomery County Councilmembers Hans Riemer, Will Jawando, and Craig Rice.

Dr. Jermaine Williams, Montgomery College President, addressed the group of local county officials and executives, as well as members of the college’s board of trustees, staff, faculty, and design/construction team personnel.
